چکیده

We report the rst detection of a hard power-law tail in the X-ray spectrum of the black hole candidate (BHC) binary X1755-338, which was observed in 1989 March-September during the TTM Galactic Centre survey. In addition, an ultrasoft thermal component with a temperature of 1:1 1:4 keV was also detected. We demonstrate that the soft and hard X-ray components of X1755-338 vary independently, as in the spectra of the well known BHCs LMC X-1, LMC X-3 and GX339-4 in their high (intensity) state. If the hard tail observed from X1755-338 is generated near the black hole by energetic electrons up-scattering low energy photons, the un-correlated variations imply that the soft X-rays from accretion disc may not be the main photon seeds needed for inverse Comptonization. The TTM observations strongly suggest that X1755-338 does indeed belong to the family of BHCs.

Optical Studies of the Transient Dipping X-ray Sources X1755−338 and X1658−298 in Quiescence

We have studied the optical counterparts of X1755−338 and X1658−298 in their X-ray “off” states. The first observations of X1755−338 in quiescence show that the counterpart, V4134 Sgr, has faded by more than 3.5 mag in V . If the mass donor in the system is an M0V star as implied by the period, our upper limits on the brightness of the counterpart suggest that it is more distant than 4 kpc. We ...

A Wolf - Rayet / black - hole X - ray binary candidate in NGC 300

Context. Wolf Rayet/black hole binaries are believed to exist as a later evolutionary product of high-mass X-ray binaries. Hundreds of such binaries may exist in galaxies, but only a few of them are close enough to be observed as X-ray binaries. Only a couple of candidates have been reported so far. Aims. Based on XMM-Newton observations, we report the positional coincidence of the brightest X-...

Discovery of a 0 . 08 Hz QPO in the power spectrum of black hole candidate XTE J 1118 + 480

We found a strong QPO feature at 0.085 ± 0.002 Hz in the power spectrum of an X-ray transient XTE J1118+480. The QPO was detected in PCA/RXTE data with an amplitude close to 10% rms, and width 0.034 ± 0.006 Hz. The shape of the power spectrum is typical for black hole candidates: almost flat at frequencies lower than 0.03 Hz, roughly a power law with slope ∼1.2 from 0.03 to 1 Hz, with steepenin...

We have re-analyzed two EXOSAT Medium Energy observations during part of the 1984 X-ray outburst of the black-hole candidate transient system 4U1630−47. One observation (May 10) shows fast timing properties (on timescales shorter than ∼250 s) typical of those of other black hole candidates in their high states. The power-spectrum shows a power law with index ∼0.7 and fractional rms amplitude (0...
